This is sponsored by Twinkl, but all of the views in here are my own. One of the things I have struggled with as I’ve been a parent this year of a kindergarten child…is homework, and practising things such as sight words. I don’t know if you know this, but sight words are inherently boring…so keeping the fun in homework has been interesting, especially when you need to learn them quickly and get 5 new ones per week! That’s where twinkl comes in! Read my review of twinkl and why I think you need it!
So how to make it more fun when doing homework? Well, there are lots of different sight word kits available on twinkl that will help you through this…and I have to admit, some of them are awesome! We have been using the twinkl Read It, Make It, Write It, Use It Activity Sheet to try and make sure we aren’t just memorising sight words, that we know how to use them too.
But stop. Twinkl isn’t all about sight words…the mindfulness colouring sheets, have been such a ht here that I have printed a set of them and we are using them as our downtime, colouring slowly and between the lines and watching the picture unfold has become a really good relaxer for Miss 6 as she often is exhausted in the afternoon.
I’ve printed off a spelling mat for the table too, which often helps with doing homework and helps with making sure that there’s reminders of some of the things that she already knows, but often forgets! As a parent it’s really hard to find good quality resources for using at home with your kids that support their learning and help them to continue on with what they are doing at school.
I can’t help but put my teacher hat on at home and we’ve been doing handwriting practice, and having fun with measuring. But what has Master 4 been doing? Well… twinkl has some awesome worksheets for cutting practice and pencil grip…and he’s been doing those whilst Miss 6 concentrates on homework. It means that he’s kept busy and out of the way and that he’s doing something which teaches him that at times you need to sit still.
