The internet seems to be going Halloween crazy, with things popping up in my newsfeed all the time! I decided to jump on the bandwagon, because even though Halloween isn't that big in Australia, I love any excuse to make a cute bento lunch. So here's my spooky Halloween bento lunch idea. Please note, I'm so organised I'm getting this to you with heaps of time to source all the bits and bobs you need!
Here's exactly what you need to recreate this lunch box:
- penguin sushi mold
- blackcat food picks
- eyes food picks
- kitchen scissors
- sharp paring knife
I got the bento supplies for this from Little Bento World (affiliate link)
Ok, let's start by getting some rice on for the sushi ghosts. I put leftover chicken in the middle and a splash of soy sauce. I love it when a bento tool has multiple uses. If you use this for it's intended use, you get adorable little sushi penguins like these:
But if you leave them plain and just add some eyes, you've got GHOSTS! I'm so stoked that one of these fell out of the cupboard yesterday and it got me thinking outside of the square.
So I then got all excited by the eyes, added them to the cucumbers and also created the little witches using them on the cherry tomatoes.
I decided to turn some little carrots into pumpkins as I wanted something traditional in the lunchbox and to me, carved pumpkins are definitely a symbol of Halloween. These were really easy to do. In the interests of being honest, I saw these elsewhere on the web maybe last Halloween. I'm not sure where, but googling took me to this pretty cool blog. The tutorial on there is absolutely perfect if you want to do these yourself.
I put the carrot pumpkins on a bed of cut up nori, as it kind of looks like spooky grass. And I couldn't help but pop the adorable little black cats in amongst the pumpkins!
The bats were made using an Annie's blackcurrant fruit strap. I just cut them free hand looking at the bats on the fabric I used for the background. The little cherry tomato and blackcurrant strap witches hats were also cut free hand with kitchen scissors.
My daughter took one look at the lavosh crackers behind the Halloween babybel (Costco!) and said "they look like tombstones!" which I hadn't actually noticed!
So there you have it, a cute, healthy, spooky Halloween bento lunch idea.
