This post is sponsored by Tip Top, but all the views in it are my own. How do you make sure that lunchboxes come home empty and that you are ensuring your kids are having a healthy and tasty lunch? We've been trying out so many different things here at Kidgredients HQ and this post is designed to show you how easily you can make bread sushi, an exciting way to get lunch eaten!
Now let's talk first about some of the statistics to come out of recent research into lunchboxes: 2 in 5 (41%) parents encourage their child to follow the same diet they do. 72% of school children have admitted to doing something with their school lunches other than eating the whole lot. Children's’ favourite sandwich fillings are cheese 31%, chicken 28% and ham 26%. Parents’ favourite sandwich fillings are chicken 49%, salad 44% and cheese 32%. So if we want our kids to eat what goes in their lunchboxes, we need to be catering to what our kids want rather than what we would want!
Tip Top has partnered with Dr Happy (Dr Timothy Sharp), an Adjunct Professor in Positive Psychology, to provide advice on how parents can keep their kids happy and healthy through food. In light of this, I asked Miss 5 what she wanted as the fillings for her bread sushi. She declared that tuna and mayo was her favourite. Because ¾ of making sure the lunchbox gets eaten is making sure it is filled with things the kids want (that are still healthy and yummy). Just opening up the conversation and recognising what your kids want is really important to making sure the food gets eaten. And eating it is in turn key to making sure that kids are fuelled up for a day at school!
But why bread sushi? Fun and playful food is the key to getting excited and getting excited...well it's key for getting that lunchbox eaten! Realistically, I hear it all the time that kids don't like wholemeal bread or seedy bread. My kids do like wholemeal and seedy bread, but if you've got a white bread aficionado, it's good to know that Tip Top The One is high in fibre, lower GI than regular white bread and contains added vitamins and minerals.

Tip Top commissioned Lonergan Research to conduct the survey. The study was conducted among 1,054 Australians including 527 parents aged 18+ and 527 children (aged 5-17). Surveys were distributed throughout Australia including both capital city and non-capital city areas. This study was conducted online amongst members of a permission based panel. After interviewing, data was weighted to the latest population estimates sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Thanks Chelsea- it's my main sandwich convincing method for Master 3!
Danya Banya says
Oh yum! My kids are sushi fantatics, so I reckon they'd totally love bread sushi. Maybe with salmon instead of tuna & mayo, and maybe cucumber ribbons instead of lettuce, lol. (PS: Incidentally we use Tip Tip The One in wholemeal, and we love it - so soft!).
Learn with Play (@Learn_with_Play) says
Yum! Your bread sushi looks so good. Love the idea of rolling it out onto the chia seeds.
Kylie says
Thanks Deborah! The kids love it.

Loved your video, you made them look so easy! My son watched with me and said he doesn't like mayonnaise, but he would like to try bread sushi!
Kylie says
Yay! That's what he's meant to want! He could easily do it with chicken, ham, any other filling he likes. The mayonnaise is mainly a binding agent or they'll be tuna everywhere.
Kate Lloyd says
Oh WOW! These looks absolutely delicious and so super healthy. Thanks for the great recipe and video.

Thanks Kate, it's always a bit of a hit here! I've got some unhealthy food coming later in the week so might as well start on a good foot.
