So Friday my dentist told you all about sugary drinks and foods. And today I’m telling you about my sneaky water tricks. I hear lots of parents saying their kids don’t like water, they only like juice or worse soft drink. My kids rarely have juice (maybe once per fortnight and even then they are sharing one little bottle between them and it’s watered down) and my son thinks that natural mineral water is something exciting, so I don’t really have that problem. Infused water is one way to convince kids that don’t really like water.
But, I grew up on juice. I completely and totally drank 6-8 glasses of the stuff every day. Every single day. So I completely understand the problem. In fact it wasn’t until I was 16 and went to Italy on my own that I actually began to drink water by itself with meals and in between.
Funnily enough though, I’ve never drunk fizzy drink- I just don’t like the sensation. But I’m getting better on the water front. The main reason for that is I’ve been using herbal teas and also fruits and herbs to flavour water. For some reason, I can’t maintain my 6-8 glasses of water a day, so I understand kids who don’t love it.
Here’s a recipe for infused water that not only tastes delicious but is extra refreshing. In fact so much so that….I will drink a litre of it per day!
Infused mint and cucumber water
Yield 1 litre
- 1 litre water
- 10 mint leaves
- 1/2 a cucumber (ten thin slices- I dd it with a peeler)
- Add the cucumber and mint to the water and muddle (push it around and mix it together, crushing the mint).
- Add the ice.
- Leave to infuse for a few hours in the fridge before drinking. (up to overnight).
I was sent a chiller 2 go drink bottle to try (that means I got it for free and for disclosure I will always tell you that- but this is my honest opinion- something money can’t buy) and (it’s supposed to be for the kids) I’ve been drinking from it every day. I pour my infused water through a strainer first so that no bits get stuck in it and I’m good to go. It keeps it really cool, so I don’t have the other age old problem: warm water is gross. And even better: it doesn’t leak. At all. It has been rolling around in my car, in my handbag and even on the floor of the loungeroom. No leaks. You can only understand how much of a crisis a leak is if you still use a planner (yes I am in the modern age) and everything gets wet. But so far, no leaks.
What can I say? I’m hard to please with water bottles and this one is ticking all the boxes! Would you like to win one? Yes? Let me know what you’d put in it in the comments below in 25 words or less.
