Early next week I’ll be showing you all the birthday party I’m having this year for the kids (it’s dragon and fairy theme). I’m very lucky, both mini Kidgredients have their birthdays within two weeks of each other. Whilst no-one is at school yet I do a combined party.
So, last year we had a jungle party. It was an easy theme to work for Miss 4 and Master 2. We went “cute” jungle rather than scary jungle. Miss 4 dressed as a tiger and Master 2 refused to dress up so he wore a shirt that fitted with the theme.
I love working with a theme for a party and searching Pinterest to find the most awesome ideas to work with. But, let’s be honest. My love for Pinterest caused me to twist 120 metres of green streamers into vines to hang from the ceiling of the sunroom where we hold the party. I had two hands of green fingers for two weeks because of those streamers.
Some of the party paraphenalia I picked up from another person who recently had a jungle party via my local buy swap sell page. Honestly, this is the best way to hunt for party supplies, even putting up an ad for stuff that fits your theme, it ends up a lot cheaper too. The best thing to remember when setting up a theme for a party is to buy minimal stuff that is licensed or featuring the specific theme, because then you can use it again. Try to choose a colour and stay with that rather than stacks of printed items, not only is it cheaper but it also means that you might be lucky enough to have a similar theme or colour scheme the next year.
We had jungle theme food, aside from the cake (those are chocolate finger biscuits around the outside) and I handmade every individual leaf on top of the cake. But I did cheat, I found somewhere I could get the royal icing animals and I was so glad I did as they were the perfect finishing touch to my tree cake. Inside the cake? White chocolate mud cake with white chocolate ganache for icing.
What else were we eating? Bruschetta, sausage rolls, mini cheese and spinach tarts, smoked salmon toasts, little apple mushrooms, handmade grissini that I called twigs, mini sandwiches, yummy chocolate crackles, two colour jellies, cake pops and cupcakes.
I can’t wait to show you this years party!
