It’s becoming more and more apparent that mindfulness and meditation plays a big part in how we are able to relax. That’s why it’s so fantastic that the Cloud Guy from the Trolls movie…remember this cute fellow?
Has teamed up with smiling minds to create a trolls based meditation that will help kids to relax and be mindful. Smiling Mind CEO and clinical psychologist Dr. Addie Wootten said the new meditation would inject some laughter into mindfulness meditation to engage more children to build this much needed skill that is known to enhance resilience and reduce emotional distress.
The movie Trolls was our firm favourite of 2016 and the kids have watched it over and over since it’s release on itunes and bluray.
How does something this awesome come about? Well, meet Willow Bailey who is only ten and who came up with the concept! I’ve interviewed her to find out more.
- What inspired you to come up with the concept?
My Mum was a child’s yoga teacher and part of that was meditation. We did meditation quite a bit at home. When I got older I started getting a bit stressed and consequently I found it hard to sleep so that’s when I started to use the Smiling Mind meditation app. It was a great way to calm myself down and forget about the stress of the day. It was after a Smiling Mind meditation that I started to wonder whether there was a meditation about my favourite book character Harry Potter. Then we thought about how cool it would be to create a meditation based on children’s favourite book/movie characters. So we contacted Smiling Mind and they loved the idea then we went to DreamWorks and they loved it too. About a month later they started talking about doing a meditation with the movie Trolls. I watched it and thought it was perfect! I loved all the positivity and happiness in the movie and I thought it was perfect for kids who are not spending enough time with their friends and family. I love the concept of “Hug Time” and “No Troll left behind!” I just want meditations to be fun for me to listen to and for other kids.
- How important is mindfulness and meditation for you?
Mindfulness and meditation is a pretty important part of my life. I now know when I need to do a meditation at home and ask mum to put Smiling Mind on for me. Mindfulness and meditation help stop the thoughts swimming around in my head and let me concentrate and make clearer decisions. I’m really glad I learnt how to meditate and be mindful while I’m young because I think I’ll need it more and more as I get older and school becomes harder.
- When do you set aside time for mindfulness in a busy day?
Mindfulness does not just have to be sitting down and going through a whole meditation, it can be as simple as doing some five-finger breathing when you feel like you just need to calm yourself down, the breath can be a great anchor for the body and mind. If you do have time in the morning or evenings it is great to run through a meditation. It does not have to be long, even five minutes, but just enough to start or finish the day in a positive way. Lots of schools are also starting to implement meditation, like Smiling Mind, into the day to give kids what they need to calm down. The Trolls Cloud Guy meditation is a great example because it is fun, engaging and it’s quick – every kid has time to do it in their day!
- How do you hope to help other kids with the app?
Before Mum started teaching yoga I did not realize how much meditation could have an effect on me physically and mentally. I thought that meditation was a waste of time and I think that quite a few kids feel that way. I hope to get more children interested in meditation. A lot of children these days don’t yet know the benefits of calming down your mind and controlling your emotions. Meditation is a path that leads you to happiness and positive thinking. A lot of children choose electronic devices to try and make them happy but it is not you being truly happy when you have a device in your hands. Don’t get me wrong, when kids start doing meditation they will still want to go on screens. I love to go on the ipad and watch TV, but as soon as mum and dad start to limit the amount of time that we spend online and do more meditation and playing outside, the better I feel. We created in coloration with Fox to support the DVD release the Trolls Cloud Guy meditation to make meditating more fun for kids and make them want to try it. We hope to create more meditations using characters that kids love from movies and books and get more kids meditating.
- What is it you love about the movie trolls?
Trolls is a great movie for the whole family because everyone can get something out of it and everyone can adopt some of the Trolls nature in their everyday lives. Some people might find it hard to automatically be like the Trolls, but the movie also shows how the Bergens find ways too change their negative nature to be more happy and positive. I think that at the start the Bergens show a fixed mindset by thinking that the only way to be happy is to eat a troll but by showing a growth mindset they change their ways and find happiness the same way that Trolls do. I think we all want to find our happy place.
- What else do you think kids can do to ensure they are happier, calmer and more relaxed?
There are lots of ways kids can relax and become happier. Things like reading, playing sport, playing with friends outside, yoga, mindfulness, watching a movie, making things/craft and just spending some quiet time by yourself.
- What other ways do you relax?
Reading is a great way to wind down after a big day. It takes my mind off the stress and anxiety of the day and just lets me get lost in the story. During quiet reading time at school I can look around and see every kid enveloped in whatever story they may be reading. Talking to other people is also a great way to get my mind off worries and solve them in a more collaborative way. I love to play games outside with my friends and having a good run around always makes me feel happy.
