We don't buy popcorn, it's so much cheaper and so easy to make at home! You just need two ingredients and you're good to go. This 2 ingredient homemade popcorn is snack time perfection.

Made with coconut oil, it's super yummy and perfect for school lunches, movie night or just a snack.
Your kids will love this popcorn
Popcorn for kids basically symbolises fun- movies, parties, they all have popcorn! And this one is nasty free and perfect for snacking.
Making popcorn at home
Why bother? Because it's cheap, you control what goes on it, and making it yourself it can be a healthy (and quick treat). Doing this 2 ingredient homemade popcorn in a pan on the stove means it tastes better than microwave popcorn and just using coconut oil keeps it dairy free.
You don't need a popcorn maker
Or a microwave, or anything fancy. The pot that you cook pasta in, so long as it has a lid is perfect for making popcorn! The best pot for this is over 4L- I use a 5.2L pasta pot and it is great. Don't use a stock pot as you need more width than height.
Popcorn for kids
It's super important when kids are eating popcorn that they:
- sit still to eat
- concentrate on chewing
- are over 5 years of age
That might sound silly, but popcorn is a major choking hazard and is not allowed in some preschools because of this. It is also something kids can aspirate, as you can read about in this article from Oh So Busy Mum.
Coconut oil vs butter
You could just as easily make this popcorn with butter if you aren't worried about the dairy-free aspect of popcorn. I like it with coconut oil and so do the kids, I think the subtle sweet flavour helps it to be a winner.
Ingredients
- 1 cup corn kernels- plus 3 kernels
- 6 tbsps coconut oil
Method
- Add the coconut oil to a large saucepan (I use a pasta pot)
- Add the three kernels to the oil and put the lid on.
- Turn the heat up to medium-high. 6-7 on my induction stove.
- The oil will melt.
- Wait until the three kernels pop, then remove them.
- Pour in the cup of kernels and wait 40 seconds.
- When they start popping keep watch!
- Shake the pan every 30 seconds for 10 seconds to ensure the popcorn doesn't burn.
- When the popping subsides, remove from the heat and keep the lid off the pan.
- The popcorn is now ready to eat!
Storing popcorn
- popcorn is best when it has just been made
- if you allow it to cool completely it will store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks
- popcorn isn't freezer friendly
